Spelling, punctuation and grammar can become a bit of a nuisance to get right. To some people it comes naturally – like riding a bike, once you get the hang of it then you’ll never forget. But to others, it can be slightly more difficult, if not impossible, to grasp.
It’s simply down to the fact that there are so many different rules and combinations. The English Language is such a complex mash-up of methods and devices that it is often hard to remember. Words can be pronounced the same but spelt in numerous different ways (‘you’re’ and ‘your’ or ‘there’, ‘their’ and ‘they’re’ are a couple of examples) and let’s not forget silent letters and vowel placement. And punctuation isn’t exactly a walk in the park either! The main culprit of confusion in the in this instance is often apostrophe placement and where the heck a semi-colon goes (whatever that is…)
To put in plainly: English is hard enough to speak correctly, but when transferring this art form onto paper, the rules and regulations are often somewhat daunting and extremely annoying.
If you have a job that requires proper spelling, punctuation and grammar or if you’re a student and need to write proper essays and coursework to achieve maximum marks, or even if you’re just someone who enjoys being prim and proper, then it is essential that you have all of these rules nailed and that your spelling, punctuation and grammar are nothing short of perfect.
And what easier way to ensure this than with an online checker to do the work for you? Simply type your writing up, run it through the online checker and there you have it: all of the mistakes and errors are highlighted and brought to your attention, so that amendments can be made.
And in this article, I am going to give you a list of some of the best online spelling, punctuation and grammar checkers, so that you can choose based on your preferences, have your work checked and have your life made easier all at once. Yes, I know, I’m too kind. But you can thank me later.
Without further ado, let’s get this show on the road and this writing made perfect!
Now, first up we have this little gem.
Not only will it scan your work for grammatical errors, spelling mistakes and missing punctuation, but it will also suggest different wording or word choices in general in order to make your writing more polished and presentable. After all, writing is just like a pair of leather shoes – in order to make it sparkle, you must polish it properly!
Grammarly can be used as an online app, or alternatively, you can download too. Which would come in especially handy if your intentions are to use the app regularly over a sustained period of time. If you do have a workload that you will regularly need checking, then I would recommend installing the app so that it is readily available, rather than having to open up the Internet every time you wish to check your work. It’s less hassle, and if you ask me, the less hassle the better, in every aspect of life.
However there is a catch, the added feature of vocabulary enhancement and also another (plagiarism check) do come with the platinum version of the app, which if opted for, will result in a charge. But like I said, if you wish to write with fluency, elegance and articulateness, then the platinum version of Grammarly is most definitely the way forward!
Here’s another free online checker!
With Hemingway, you simply paste your work into the text box on their site and then wait for the checker to do its thing. It will highlight your work in a series of different colours which all have varying meanings. For example, green is to show you that your sentence is written in passive voice. Red basically means that your sentence is so muddled and complex that not even Shakespeare himself could make sense of it. Yellow suggests that something isn’t quite as drastically complex as red, but it could still do with some editing to make it flow more beautifully. Purple highlighting means that you can replace the highlighted word with a shorter word (which to me, is more a case of personal preference – but hey ho) and finally, if a word is highlighted blue, then that means that you could remove that word without altering the meaning of the sentence.
Once you have gone through and corrected all of your mistakes, simply paste it in again and see if it suggests anything else. If not, well done, your work is immaculate. If more highlights appear then get to work soldier, repeat the process until your writing is gleaming like a Texan lake under the midday sun.
Voice, in my opinion, is the most important part of writing, however, embarrassing mistakes and errors in your work must be avoided at all costs too. Imagine putting your work out there to be read and enjoyed and the readers discover simple spelling mistakes or grammatical errors – how embarrassing would that be! You’re work should be as perfect as possible, anything less just isn’t acceptable. (I bet you’re thinking that it’s quite ironic, huh? In an article that discusses the importance of proper spelling, punctuation and grammar, the word ‘you’re’ is inputted in the wrong context – but don’t worry, it was done on purpose. Jokes on you!)
Hey, it may have been a terribly thought out joke, with equally terrible execution, but at least it adds a little flavour to my writing. That is what I mean when I say ‘voice’ – something that spices up the writing, makes it more enjoyable to read and makes it distinguishable; almost recognisable just by the way it’s written. It should be so individual to you that someone who is familiar with your work should be able to read some and think: ‘yep, that’s them alright’.
Ginger is great for helping you to achieve said perfection!
You can use the online version or download and install the app onto your computer for faster and more efficient access. With features like Grammar Checker, Sentence Rephraser and Personal Trainer, you can’t really go wrong. Your work will be sparkling in no time at all!
It also includes a dictionary and a nifty little unique feature, which converts your written text into speech and plays it back to you, so that you can hear just exactly how a sentence reads and make amendments if necessary.
Ginger has features that make your writing more personal and let your original voice shine through in the writing, this means that any readers of yours will develop more of a connection with your work, because it won’t be written in boring, draining monotone style, that is generic of a certain genre or style.
Whitesmoke offers a whole host of features, which help to keep the standard of your writing high.
It includes the standard spellchecking and grammar checking functions, but rather than simply locating them and making them apparent, it does the work and corrects them for you, leaving you to enjoy the relaxation that you truly deserve after your gruelling writing session.
It also happens to improve your writing style too. It does this by not only correcting your mistakes, but it also makes sure that your writing sounds original by checking for unoriginal content. So basically, if you start overusing (or even using at all, which I think is bad enough) terrible clichés or things that you’ve heard elsewhere, Whitesmoke will suggest changing the sentence or phrase, if not for your sake, then most definitely for the sake of your readers! (Which by the way, I doubt you’ll have if you keep being an unoriginal, cliché using, puke-evoking person.)
This one is ridiculously hard to find on Google! With such a complex and totally irrelevant-to-what-it-is-used-for name, Spellchecker is almost impossible to locate. (Yes, I am being sarcastic, just in case for whatever reason you haven’t actually caught on yet.)
Spellchecker is incredibly self-explanatory; the phrase ‘does what it says on the tin’ couldn’t be more applicable here. (Yes, I know. “But I though you said no clichés?” Well it all depends on the delivery; I put it in quotation marks to signify its overuse, thus allowing it to be acceptable.)
If you haven’t guessed it by now, then what Spellchecker does is check your spelling. It’s really that simple. You go to their site, paste in your content and then it will scan through and locate and correct any spelling mistakes that may exist in the body of the text. Now your work is ready to be put out there! So go on, get to it!
After The Deadline
If you’re having doubts or concerns about the legitimacy or accuracy of any of these online tools and you’re looking to find one that you know you can trust, then look no further than After The Deadline. It was created by Automattic – the same company who created the WordPress blogging platform – so I’m sure that you’ll be able to trust a company with such huge success thus far.
With this tool you can do the standard things: check for grammatical, spelling and punctuation-based errors and it will also suggest corrections or areas where the style of your writing could be enhanced. The only thing that distinguishes this one from the rest of the field is the fact that it was developed by a successful and trustworthy company, so you can guarantee that the corrections and suggestions that you are receiving are incredibly accurate!
This is definitely worth using.
This one is a game changer!
You can type directly into the text box on their site and as you go, Grammarcheck goes through your work and picks out any and all errors that you make. But here’s the best part: not only will it locate any errors, but it will also amend them automatically, as you type, meaning a massive saving of time on your behalf.
With Grammarcheck, no longer will you have to sift through all of the green, red and blue highlights that word offers up, trying to figure out what the heck they even mean… I mean, seriously, it’s all good telling us that we should ‘consider revising the fragment’ but how and why are the important parts. And Spellcheck doesn’t just highlight spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors – it does the work for you. Meaning that you can get on with the more important things like writing fluency, style and voice. Now your writing is guaranteed to be read in its best state!
And Now You’re Ready to Take on the World
Get out there and make your writing heard, let your voice become known!
You now have the power to do so and all through a little polishing and perfecting by using these checking tools. It really is the little things in life that count (oopsies, another cliché) and with writing, that rule still applies. The tiny, minute details, when focused on consistently, will help your writing to shine more than that of someone who doesn’t bother to check their work for small errors or areas where something could be written more wonderfully!
If you use these checkers and manage to successfully locate and amend some errors that exist within your work, then congratulations! You are one of the few dedicated individuals who are willing to go that extra mile in order to make themselves known, in order to prosper in their writing and in life in general in fact. Trust me, after you learn to take pride in your work and once you learn to try your best to make it the best you possibly can, then you’ll never, ever look back. Trust me, I’ve been there before and let me tell you, I’ll never go back. Now get out there and let your polished words be read by the masses!
