Best Guide to Downloading Free MP3 Songs

Thanks to the Internet, you can find just about anything for free. This is especially true for music. Why spend your hard-earned money on an album when you can download it for free?

But free stuff can often come with a hefty price of its own. Several sites offer free music that install viruses or other types of malware on your device upon download.

This is why we’ve compiled a list of safe MP3 download sites for all you frugal music lovers out there. Some of the sites even incorporate ways for you to support the artists, making you feel a little less guilty about downloading your favorite tunes for free.

(Please note that, at the time of posting, all sites listed are genuine, legal, and virus-free. However, it is a good idea to install a virus protection program like MalwareBytes if you don’t already have one, just in case.)

MP3Base’s user-friendly interface lets you browse by song, album, artist, or genre. Alternatively, you can scroll through their homepage, where they’ve compiled lists of top songs, albums, and artists. Each category includes 25 items.

You can download individual songs or entire albums – whichever suits you best.

You also have the option to play the song or album you want before you download it. That way, you can make sure it’s the right song and it works properly.

Each album listed on the site includes the date of publication, the number of tracks, and the overall length of the album.

If you don’t want to download, you can also create a free account. Free accounts allow you to create playlists of your favorite songs. You don’t need an account to download music, though.

MP3Skull offers one of the largest selections of free MP3s on the web.

MP3Skull works a little differently than MP3Base. It’s essentially a search engine for free MP3s. Simply search for the song you want, and MP3Skull will find every safe MP3 result on the internet for you.

Results from a search appear within a fraction of a second. Each MP3 download link includes the source and duration of the song. Many of their downloads come from trusted sites like Soundcloud and YouTube.

You can also play the song before you download to make sure it’s legitimate.

They also have a free YouTube converter. Just paste the YouTube link in the search bar and it will automatically convert the audio from your video into an MP3 file you can download. Additionally, you can watch the video before you convert.

BeeMP3 boasts over a million free MP3s. You can filter your search results based on bitrate and duration. You can also choose to exclude remixes.

If they don’t have the song you’re looking for, you can still search for it on their site through other free download sites like 4shared, Aimini, and Playlist.

Their homepage includes the 30 top downloads from the site, giving you a sense of what kind of music they offer. They also display the most recent 200 searches – perfect if you’re looking to listen to something new.

If you don’t like their selection, or if they don’t have the song you want, you can submit your own MP3s to make it even easier for others to enjoy the site.

You can even download a special toolbar for Firefox that allows you to search for songs from your browser’s toolbar.

The self-proclaimed ‘center of sound’ allow you to create online playlists for free. You can then download songs from the playlist to your device. They also give you the option to share your playlists on your social media sites and personal blogs.

Epitonic gives you the best range of search options. Search by:

  • Artist. Their extensive A-Z list provides you with the newest artists to hit the scene.
  • Recording label. This list features mostly independent names, but some famous ones, too. Did you know Adult Swim has a recording label? Now you do – and you can download their songs through Epitonic.
  • Genre. Not just your standard rock, hip-hop, and jazz categories. Epitonic features genres like acid rock, avant-pop, and field recordings if you’re feeling adventurous.
  • Scene. You can search for music based on the city where it was made. They have locations all across the US and Canada, including Kansas City, Missouri, and Montreal.
  • Editors. Unlike any other MP3 download site, you can search for songs based on their editors. These are mostly independent names and include students and music lovers from all across the world.

Epitonic has a passion for music that’s unparalleled. Indie artists, DJs, record collectors, and music fanatics all helped contribute to the site’s selection. They even have a blog where they discuss the best upcoming artists.

In fact, the site has been around since 1999, but went through some financial mishap in 2004. It officially re-launched in 2011, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign started by the site’s original founders.

They also have what’s called ‘saki sessions’, where they partner with saki Records to put on live shows featuring independent artists. Every live session is free to attend, and all recordings are available to the public for free.

If you’re looking for some fresh, new tunes that you won’t find anywhere else, make Epitonic your number one destination. After all, underground music is their specialty.

A word to the wise: if you’re using an AdBlocker, you’ll need to disable or pause it in order to use the site. It’s a good idea to have another pop-up blocker active, though, since the site opens ads in a new window.

The Free Music Archive features music available to the public domain. It’s owned by WFMU, a popular American radio station.

They’re driven by a single principle: that radio has long provided everyone with free music. They believe that access has benefited both artists and the public for decades.

Each song featured on the site has been evaluated so that it does not infringe on copyright laws. Songs are hand-picked by the site’s curators, who work closely with venues and artists to offer you the best tunes.

You can register for an account with the site, where you can talk to other listeners and create your own mixes. Accounts also have a blogging feature, and you can post about your favorite music and artists. With an account, you can also “tip” artists directly.

You can browse through the search bar or by standard genres. They offer some unorthodox genres as well:

  • Experimental
  • Folk
  • International
  • Spoken
  • Old-Time/Historic

Alternatively, you can find new music by searching the charts. Instead of offering top 20 or 100 charts, Free Music Archive’s charts are sorted by time. Find out what’s been popular the past week, the past month, or all time.

Free Music Archive also has free apps available for Android and iOS.

noisetrade.comnoise trade

NoiseTrade is a revolutionary download site. It works a little differently than most of the sites listed here. In order to download music for free, you’ll need to supply your email address and postcode.

This is because NoiseTrade is partly a promotion website. They encourage users to promote the artists they find on the site on their other social networks. You can also support independent artists by tipping them directly – the suggested donation amount is $4.

If you make an account on the site, NoiseTrade will provide you with recommendations for new music.

NoiseTrade also features premier, exclusive content from artists. New music or albums may appear on NoiseTrade before they’re made available anywhere else.

NoiseTrade is also different because it offers free books. Many of the books are educational, so while you’re listening to new music, you can learn something new, too. Each book listing includes the number of pages, publication date, related authors, and more.

Once again, all links provided in this article are safe and legal. Always use caution with other MP3 download sites; not all of them are legitimate.

Beware of any website that doesn’t include some sort of disclaimer or about page. Many of these sites include copyrighted content that is illegal to download.

Always be sure to have a good anti-virus program. While these sites are safe, you can never be too careful.

It is a good idea to install an ad blocker or a pop-up blocker when using these sites. The reason many of them offer free music is because they are funded by these ads. While they might be annoying, they are necessary for the site to run.

Now sit back, relax, enjoy your free music, and use the cash you saved to treat yourself.
